Course experiences: Future animal health professionals learn about biomechanics from Master Farrier

    27 January 2025

Marc Jerram, Master Farrier, about lecturing to Harper Adams students:

A great day lecturing at ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ to Veterinary Physiotherapy, Veterinary Bioscience and Animal Behaviour and Welfare students on Equine Biomechanics.

The initial lecture focused on the modern day approach to assessment of the horse’s hoof and gait using the best technology in the field, how this is used to formulate hoofcare plans and how repeat assessments can help to establish long term soundness.

There was then a practical demonstration on some university horses where the students were asked to note their own observations before returning to the classroom to discuss the findings against theirs. The one horse had their findings compared against the previous session last year.

These students will be future of providing healthcare services to your horses, so it was great to present to them today on how we, as farriers, work as a team alongside them to help horses maintain their optimal health and soundness.
